Oil Pastel Dinosaur Landscapes

1.5 hour Activity (Age 6-8)

Materials:

• Mixed Media Paper
• Oil Pastel
• Charcoal Tracing Paper
• Images of Dinosaurs
• Smudge Stick
• Tracing Stylus
• Q-Tips
• Masking Tape
• Pencil
• Cut-out silhouettes of dinosaurs

Project Steps

Step 1: Trace a Dinosaur of your choice 

• Apply masking tape to the edges of the paper so it sticks to the table.
  
• Chose a dino image.
  
• Place the charcoal paper (dark side faced down) on your paper.
  
• Place your dino image on top of the charcoal paper.

• Using a tracing stylos, trace over all the lines of the dino image.
  
• Make sure you traced the entire image and did not forget a line.

Step 2: Add a landscape

• Using a pencil, add a foreground, middle ground and background.

Step 3: Trace your pencil lines with a dark oil pastel colour

Step 4: Add other oil pastel colors and colour in the entire image.

• Use a different colour for each component of your image​​

Step 5: Blend the colours

• Using a smudge stick, Q-tip, another colour oil pastel, or your fingers to blend the colours together.
  
• Make sure to leave no empty white spaces in your images, as your image should be entirely covered in oil pastels.

Step 6: Retrace the outlines of your image with the same original outline colour

• This will make your image stand out even more and make the lines cleaner.
