Galaxy with Soft Pastel

Technique: Painting with rollers and toothpick, blending soft pastels and tracing circles.

Materials

  • Mixed Media Paper
  • Soft Pastels
  • Q-tips
  • Tooth picks
  • Black and White Acrylic Paints
  • ​Masking Tape
  • Sponge Rollers
  • ​Containers for Paint
  • ​Chalk

Project Steps

Step 1: Tape the edges of the paper to the table with masking tape.
Step 2: Use a paint roller to apply black paint to the paper.

Step 3:  Use a toothpick to apply white paint to the painted paper to create stars.

Step 4: Draw circles of different shapes to show where your planets will be.

Step 5: Use the soft pastels to apply colours and designs to your planets. You can also create colourful clouds.

Warm-Up Exercise: Positive & Negative Space

  • This exercise is good during the main activity for kids to do as they wait for the paint to dry. It will allow them to practice blending soft pastels before they use them to create their planets. 

Materials

  • Stencils of Shapes
  • Scissors
  • Masking tape
  • Black Card Stock
  • Soft Pastels

Step 1: Pick and cut-out a shape

Step 2: Put masking tape on the  shape.

Step 4: Add different coloured soft pastels around the shape.

Step 3: Stick the shape to the black paper.

Step 5: Blend it with your finger or Q-tip.

Step 6: Remove the shape.
